Building a Greener Future - One Lesson at a Time

Founded in 1993 in Montréal, Québec, ELAM is a virtual corporate language school with environmental responsibility at its core. Since 2016, we’ve operated in a fully paperless, virtual environment — not out of trend, but as a deliberate and permanent structural choice. For more than three years, we’ve proudly held Green Business Bureau (GBB) certification, a recognition that reflects how deeply environmental awareness is ingrained in our working practices. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint, acting responsibly, continuously improving our sustainable operations, and reporting our results transparently to our clients, trainers, and the communities we serve.

A zero-commute model by design

Our greatest environmental contribution is architectural. ELAM has no classrooms, no campus, and no commute — for anyone. All training is delivered 100% virtually via Microsoft Teams, eliminating the primary sources of carbon in conventional language education: no student or trainer travel, no building energy consumption, and no physical signage or print materials of any kind. Our training infrastructure is hosted on Microsoft Azure, whose parent company has committed to becoming carbon negative by 2030 and removing all historical carbon emissions by 2050 — a standard that aligns with our own values.

Entirely digital learning materials

Paper plays no role in the ELAM learner journey. All resources are digital, from our CEFR-aligned Profile+ framework accessible via SharePoint, to app-based mobile learning through platforms like Busuu and Mauril. Reading materials, exercises, AI-assisted session summaries, and vocabulary journals are all provided digitally. No printing is required or encouraged at any stage.

A remote-first workforce

All ELAM trainers and administrative staff work remotely. With over 100 certified language trainers located around the world, no one is required to travel to a physical location to deliver our services. This distributed model is a standing operational and environmental policy — one we have no intention of changing.

Responsible procurement

When selecting tools, platforms, and third-party services, we prioritize cloud-based and digital solutions, suppliers with published sustainability commitments, and platforms with low-bandwidth options that reduce our digital energy footprint. Sustainability informs every partnership decision we make.

Giving back to our communities

Our environmental commitment extends beyond our own operations. ELAM donates annually to Oceans International to support marine ecosystem conservation. We also provide compost bins to local elementary schools across Montreal and the South Shore, helping build green habits in the next generation from an early age.

Environmental awareness as part of our culture

We actively encourage sustainable habits among our learners, trainers, and the broader language-learning community. Through LinkedIn groups, social media content, and trainer onboarding, we promote self-study, app-based learning, and digital resources — reducing the need for travel-based immersion programs and showing that learning well and living sustainably can go hand in hand.
