\u00a0One of the most\u00a0popular questions\u00a0people ask when beginning a new language is: \u201cHow long do I need to become fluent?\u201d The truth is language learning does not come with a timetable. Progress depends on a few factors, including the learner\u2019s starting level, consistency in\u00a0studying\u00a0and the opportunity to use the language in everyday life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the\u00a0Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR<\/strong>)<\/a>\u00a0and similar frameworks can be used to provide a more realistic estimate of the time it will take to progress from one level to another. For example, most training benchmarks predict progress on the level of a\u00a0language\u00a0requires 150 to\u00a0200 hours\u00a0of study, depending on the stage of learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0Understanding Language Levels.<\/b>\u00a0<\/h4>\n

\"Fremdsprachen,Language learning is traditionally grouped into several levels denoting higher order levels of communicative competency.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0Learners beginning at A0 level will have\u00a0roughly 100\u00a0vocabulary words and basic expressions. Most experts have said that up to\u00a050 hours\u00a0is needed to improve.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After which is A1 (beginner) of learners. At this level, students have mastered about 700 words on average and can say simple phrases for greeting, saying hello,\u00a0introduce\u00a0themselves, and responding to basic needs. It takes around\u00a0150 hours\u00a0of training to reach this level.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0The A2 level (pre-intermediate) builds communication strategies in an applied manner. Learners learn to expand their vocabulary to approximately 1,500\u00a0words and\u00a0can carry\u00a0out mundane daily tasks in every kind of everyday life, such as shopping, coordinating, or at work. That level usually takes around\u00a0200 hours\u00a0of studying.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

At B1 (intermediate), students will be able to carry on quick conversations about familiar information, aided by a vocabulary of around 2,500 words and another\u00a0200 hours\u00a0of study.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Then you advance to B2 (upper-intermediate), in which the vocabulary\u00a0builds to\u00a0~4,000\u00a0words\u00a0and learners are able to confidently speak about a very large number of professional and social topics.\u00a0Typically, about\u00a0200 hours\u00a0of study goes into this level as well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0Advanced learners achieve C1, when vocabulary grows to around 8,000 words, which allows them to communicate fluently in almost any situation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the end, this brings the level of competence to C2 or mastery –\u00a0almost natively\u00a0capable of speaking in\u00a0perhaps the\u00a0next 16,000 words and of speaking precisely and with finesse.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0Although helpful, these\u00a0hours\u00a0estimates are an excellent\u00a0guide,\u00a0several\u00a0factors<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0can help speed-up \u2013 or slow down \u2013 progress.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Consistency\u00a0of\u00a0Practice.<\/b><\/a>\u00a0<\/h6>\n

\u00a0Short, more frequent practice sessions are also often more effective than sometimes extended, long ones. Only 10 or 20\u00a0minutes,\u00a0even daily exposure can lead to a great\u00a0deal\u00a0greater retention and fluency.\u00a0<\/p>\n
